Kentucky Derby Party Ideas

By Sara LeDuc

The Kentucky Derby is this weekend and is the perfect excuse to throw a great party. We’re talking one for the books! Even if you don’t have anything planned yet, there’s still just enough time to put something together that is fun, chic, and memorable. After all, this event only comes once a year and deserves to be celebrated!

Since we’re getting down to the wire on the party planning timelines, we’ve put together a full derby party how-to. Here’s everything you need to put together:

Finger Foods:

You don’t need to do anything too crazy when it comes to food for your derby bash. Instead, put together simple finger foods, just like what would be at any great southern party! We’ve gathered a few recipes for you to try:

Country Ham & Biscuits - A classic southern recipe for sure, this is a great appetizer that will fill your guests up yet not leave them too full.

Melon Salad with Mint - Since mint is a derby must, how could you resist this recipe? It’s cool, unique, delicious, and refreshing...not to mention totally perfect for the occasion!

Decor:

Since this party is more on a whim, there’s no need to go crazy with the decorations. But, that doesn’t mean you can’t put together a little something. We love this simple yet perfectly preppy and tailored look that is sure to impress your guests. We also love so many of these cupcake liner crafts that, with the right patterns, would be perfect to decorate with.

Drinks:

What would a party be without drinks? Here are three cocktails you must include:

Mint Julep - Simply put: it’s a Kentucky Derby must.

Peach Julep - A pleasant spin on the classic derby drink! This is a great choice to add something sweet to the party!

Mint Infused Limeade - This is a great option first of all because it’s a punch and easy to serve and also because it can be made with or without alcohol.

Desserts:

What kind of party would this be without desserts? A dessert table should steal the show at your party, in fact! Make it like this one and it’s sure to be a hit. Here’s what we recommend:

Chocolate Bourbon Walnut Pie - Just the name of this has our mouth watering! And with the bourbon, what could be more perfect for this specific party?!

Mint Julep Cupcakes - These are great because they’re super easy to serve and fit amazingly with the theme. Plus, they look so festive!

Bourbon Balls - These are a classic and traditional derby dessert that you absolutely must include! No ifs, ands, or buts about it!

Well - there you are! The perfect tips for an awesome Kentucky Derby bash that looks like it took a long time, but it was actually a cinch!
